Convert Your Glock .357 - .40 Caliber and Vice Versa?

April 2, 2007 - 06:30 PM

Many of our loyal customers call or email to ask if they can turn their .357 into a .40 caliber. For example…..can you take your G31 which is the full-size .357 caliber Glock and drop a G22 .40 caliber barrel into it without any problems…..the answer is Yes!!

That’s good news for many of you who, once you purchase the .357 G31, come to find out that the ammo is much more expensive than the typical .40 caliber ammo. If you think about it, the .357 is a necked down cartridge, necked down from a .40 caliber case to hold the .357 bullet. There is some expense to that procedure and the .357 is not as mass produced as the .40 caliber which also contributes to the added cost. The width of the base of the case of the .357 is exactly the same as the .40 caliber. Hence, the magazines are exactly the same, the frame is exactly the same, all the internal parts are the same and the barrel is almost the same…..the only difference, the size of the bore.

Many of our customers like the versatility that this allows and all of them enjoy the cost savings. For those of you who own the G31, the G32 and/or the G33, now you know that you can drop a new barrel into your gun and change it to a .40 caliber using the following barrels respectively, G22, G23 and/or G27.

Of course, the longer barrels always fit into the gun as they will just stick out of the frame depending on the gun type.

One side note, you cannot convert a 9mm to .40 caliber or vise versa. Even though the frames are almost identical in size, you’ll notice that the barrel will not “lock up” or “go into battery” in the slide.
Of course, whenever changing barrels, one must exercise caution when handling ammunition as you would not want to substitute .40 caliber ammo into a .357 barrel or the other way around. I suggest that if you make a barrel change, change the magazines too as they will say, .357 or .40 right on the back of the magazine. And,  if you make this change, make sure to put your ammo away with the barrel you are not using so you don’t accidentally load it into your magazine.

For now, good luck and safe shooting. Thanks for visiting www.glockstore.com

This switch I have found to be correct since I have a g23,g32,and g33.I personally like the 357 round for power.Ialso like the 40 and found it cheaper to practice with. when buying target rounds for the357 you might try walmart.
